GSTT’s Mentorship Programme 2017

Summary

The GSTT’s mentorship programme is designed to support personal growth and career development of its participants in the Energy Industry. It will be a mutually enriching relationship between mentor and mentee and will offer participants both structure and flexibility.

The mentor

Who is a mentor?

A mentor is an experienced individual who guides and assists another to attain new abilities and understandings, and achieve his/her potential.

A mentor

  • Volunteers time to develop and support others
  • Is patient and supportive: Creates a candid relationship, while building trust and confidence with the mentee.
  • Actively listens and encourages
  • Understands what is important to the mentee, exploring their skills and ambitions
  • Is trustworthy and will treat these discussions as confidential

Benefits of mentoring

The mentee

His/her attitude towards personal growth and commitment to the programme is key. The mentee should

  • Have common interests with the mentor
  • Understand that the role of the mentor is to challenge, encourage and support, but not to  provide answers
  • Be prepared to actively engage with the mentor
  • Be open to ideas, suggestions and different perspectives

Time commitment

It is expected that over the 3 month period, the mentor/mentee will engage a minimum of 5 times to achieve the objectives outlined above. Additional coaching sessions on expectations will be coordinated by the GSTT.

The relationship

Relationships that start with a clear ‘learning contract’ are generally the most rewarding.

  • It is important that ground-rules are established at the beginning of the relationship, to avoid misunderstanding later on. These may include the timings and format of the meetings, the anticipated length of the commitment and method of communication.
  • Responsibilities and expected outcomes should be discussed at an early stage. It is important to state any specific results the mentee hopes to gain from the relationship and how these will be measured.
  • Participants MUST not discuss/disclose company information. Any breach of this agreement will result in an immediate suspension from the programme.
